We had another one of those ‘you can’t make this stuff up’ experiences at WCCC last weekend. As a conclusion to our Power of 1 Question series, we discussed the value of being counted ‘in the fold with the 99 sheep.’ I challenged anyone who was not a member of the flock here to step up (and back!) and commit. We are still processing decisions and making phone calls to those who responded, but we believe that approximately 130 people made a membership decision. Wow! Only a God on the move and a human heart that’s open could produce such a thing. Cincinnati may have been focused on elections, collective bargaining, and street cars, but heaven was watching and celebrating this. (By the way, this month our WCCC children have been praying for all our elected officials, which is also very biblical.)
Even though we had over 1300 in attendance last weekend, there are still seats we can fill. Lost and wandering sheep are everywhere. Who will you ask to fill an empty seat this weekend? Try to be winsome, but do whatever it takes!
I heard about a recent convert who was not that well educated and rather rough around the edges, but he was fired up for the Lord. He was constantly pestering the pastor to give him some work that would be helpful to the church. Finally the pastor agreed. He gave the man a list of ten people who hadn’t been in church for years nor made any financial contribution. Some of these were quite prominent in the community. The pastor said, ‘What I want you to do is get these people back to church, however you can. You can use church stationery if you want, but get these people back to church.’ Three weeks later the pastor got an envelope in the mail from a prominent citizen whose name had been on the list, along with a check for $1,000 and a note that read, “Dear Pastor, Please excuse my inactivity at church. I really have no excuse. Accept this check as a partial contribution for all the Sundays I’ve missed, and be assured I will never miss worship again. Sincerely, J. B. Jones, M.D. P.S. – Will you kindly tell your secretary that there is only one “t” in dirty and no “c” in skunk?!” Do whatever it takes!
We saw our new Latino Bible Study get filled with people last weekend too. 16 people showed up (7 adults/9 children) with the majority being new to WCCC. The lesson was done totally in Spanish with Spanish Bibles & lesson plans given to all. Congrats to Gary Lee, Chris Fuller and our entire Latino Ministry team for a great launch. The class will continue every Saturday from 4-5pm in 134.
This coming weekend, the joy continues!
Special Thank Offering envelopes will be in the seats and bulletins which will go toward funding our church-wide Benevolence Ministry in 2012. Please consider a generous 1 time gift for this worthy ministry helping the poor. We’d like to raise at least $20,000 from this Thank Offering.
Operation Christmas Child continues as we go international with His love! Please bring your OCC shoeboxes in now to help build Whitewater’s Wall of Boxes this year!
Our biggest Christmas generosity initiative will be our Christmas Toy Store on Friday, December 2nd. You will get some crucial info about it this coming weekend. We need all hands on deck in order to fully deck the halls!
We’ll honor our Veterans in a special way. Come and thank those who have served our country, as well as our church over the years. If you are a veteran, I’d love to get a picture with you and your family. Please come up to the platform before/after service. We’ll have a photographer ready to snap a picture.
Christmas Dessert Theater tickets go on sale (in the hallway to the right of the Worship Center). It is Friday, Dec. 16, with 2 performances: 6 & 8pm. Denver Bierman and The Mile High Orchestra will join our choir as special guests. Tickets cost $10. (Checks should be made payable to WCCC.)
We launch a brand new series called Take God at His Word. If you’ve ever felt frustrated or even aggravated by the topic of giving, you will be surprised by what you’ll read in God’s Word and the little book we have been giving out the last few weekends (Take God at His Word by Dr. Kregg Hood). Have you read the introduction and chapter 1 yet? If not, please do so before services this weekend. I read it today and the exciting truths in this book will encourage genuine generosity in you and our church. Please join us as we learn, grow, and receive God’s rewards together. The book and this series will lead us to an important time of congregational commitment on November 19/20. If you didn’t receive your copy of Take God at His Word, we have some in the office here, as well as some copies this weekend. Just ask.
Can’t wait for another Whitewater weekend! You can’t make this stuff up!
P.S. You are invited to attend a reception in honor of the 50th Wedding anniversary for former WCCC Senior Minister, Dr. Brad and Barbara Walden. Brad and Barbara laid an outstanding foundation at WCCC years ago which we are enjoying today. It is Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011 from 2:00-4:00pm at the Tates Creek Christian Church, 3150 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, KY. (They request no gifts.) Congratulations Brad and Barbara!
